Why Many Project Managers Fail the PMP Examination

March 20, 2023by admin0

Having been conducting Project Management (PMP) certification training over the years, we have identified certain reasons why many project managers fail their PMP Examination.

Are you interested in taking the Project Management (PMP) training soon? One of the main objectives you have for the training is probably to write the PMP examination. As a growth focused executive, you want to pass the examination. So, knowing why people fail it will help you to be better positioned to pass it.

The following are the reasons why people fail the PMP exam.

Inexperienced trainers:  Experience is not read in books nor sold in the market but is only acquired over time. The level of our exposure to certain settings and situations determines our efficiency in it. Thus, it is pertinent for you to consider the level of experience of a project manager trainer before engaging his services. In evaluating his experience, you should take cognizant of the performance of his trainees in the PMP examination as well as their success on the field.

Inadequate preparation time: Time is fleeting in nature and you will never get enough of it to carry out any task therefore you must maximize the little you have to yield the best result. Preparing a study guide will help you use the little time at your disposal to your advantage. Draft your daily itinerary to accommodate your study time, know the best hours you assimilate while studying and if you need to leave your environment to a more serene and quiet place, do so. Furthermore, you can enroll for your PMP examination during your annual leave at work in order to give yourself ample time for preparation.

Insufficient practice of past examination question: Study past PMP examination questions as much as you can as this will serve as a lead into the kind of questions to expect. Read extensively on the issues raised in the each question so you will not fumble if you are served with an “old wine in a new skin”.  However, do not limit your study to past question papers only to avoid being stunned with entirely new stuffs. Buy new materials, engage the services of experienced trainers to avoid being “penny wise pound foolish” because your failure in the examination will require you enrolling for it all over and invariably spending more money.

Not letting go of old project management ideologies: The only thing constant and dynamic is change and a man who is dogmatic in his ideas will easily fade away in the ever changing world of today. Everyday old ways of doing things are being discarded for new ones and you must upgrade yourself to stay in vogue.  You must constantly update yourself with new ideas and methods in project management before sitting for the PMP examination so you do not lag behind.

Enrolling for the examination before preparation:  Good preparation prevents poor performance therefore embarking on any task without preparing for it is deliberately programming yourself for failure. Ensure you acquire study materials, read and engage the services of a trainer to tutor you and get you prepared for the PMP examination before enrolling to avoid being under prepared due to limited interval between the date of enrollment and the actual date of examination.

Preparing with the wrong materials: The type of materials you prepare with is instrumental to your performance in the examination. Make enquires on how to secure quality and updated study materials. Avoid the entirely free tea (i.e.), complement free online study materials with paid materials and keep yourself abreast with changes in ideologies and concepts in project management before sitting for the PMP examination.

Lack of understanding in application of terms: A good grasps of the terminologies in project management is vital to your success in the PMP examination. Ask questions, read updated materials, revise recent examination questions, surf the internet as well as engage the services of experienced project manager trainers to keep yourself in tune with the latest terms and their application in project management before sitting for your PMP examination.
