How to create Performance Improvement Plan for Employees

Many human resource practitioners and organizational leaders employ the use of a performance improvement plan mostly when staff do not discharge their duty well. But every employee needs it.

Creating a performance improvement plan (PIP) for an employee requires careful consideration and planning to ensure that it is effective and fair. Below are some steps to follow.

  1. Identify the performance issue: Identify the specific performance issue(s) that the employee is struggling with. These could be related to productivity, quality of work, attitude, behavior, or any other relevant area.
  2. Set clear expectations: Define clear expectations for the employee’s performance, including specific goals and objectives that need to be met. This should be done in collaboration with the employee to ensure that they understand what is expected of them.
  3. Develop a plan: Develop a plan that outlines the steps the employee needs to take to improve their performance. This should include specific actions the employee needs to take, as well as any resources or support they may need.
  4. Set timelines: Set timelines for achieving the goals and objectives outlined in the plan. These should be reasonable and achievable, and should be communicated clearly to the employee.
  5. Provide feedback and support: Provide regular feedback and support to the employee throughout the plan. This should include both positive feedback for progress made, as well as constructive feedback for areas that still need improvement.
  6. Monitor progress: Monitor the employee’s progress regularly and document any improvements or setbacks. This will help you to determine whether the plan is working and whether any adjustments need to be made.
